Traded Project Thanks Obama yesterday. The truck served us well over the past few years but I was bored and wanted something different.
Well different is what I got. A 1994 Cadillac Eldorado ETC. 295hp 4.6 V8 from a time when others were barely squeezing 225 out of similarly-sized plants. All those horses are pumped through a 4T80E to the front wheels. Soft, cigarette stained leather greets you as you open the door. It’s purple.
It needs some things: a deep clean, a dogbone, some brake fluid, a couple resistors. And chrome repair. But I’m pleased with the trade. The Northstar plant runs great at 148k miles and the transmission feels competent - like it’s had a fairly leisurely life.

yessssssssssssss
I wonder how it would look with all the chrome plastidipped black?
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:21 |

Hey, not a bad idea! I am definitely considering doing something with all that chrome - I don’t feel it belongs on the sporting model
Edit: Maybe also get the 1995 refresh parts - bumpers, trim and grille. Those are pretty much all the bits that bother me

etcetera

Aw, I’m gonna miss the Dakota.
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:23 |

Those seats look comfy as fuck.
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:23 |
|
Yeh, I’m still giggling a bit about that too
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:24 |
|
They are comfy as fuck
It’s like driving a couch in nearly every aspect
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:25 |
|
Yeah. I was just done with it. I don’t have the time to do everything it needed and I definitely didn’t want to do a cross-country move in it. Overload leafs lead to broken spines ;)
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:28 |
|
I’m actually surprised at how well mine rides. It’s not a Caddy (wink wink), but I’d be able to live with it. Of course, I’m 17, so I could probably deal with riding a rock across country.
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:29 |
|
Put overloads on it, drive empty down some lesser-maintained roads, and get back to me on that
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:30 |
|
I’ve done that lesser maintained roads part. Michigan has the worst roads in the country, I’d be willing to bet. I don’t know if it has overload springs.

Northstar.... Nice car though
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:33 |
|
If it’s comfortable, it don’t :)
I could put 3,600 lbs in the bed no problem. With it unloaded, the rear would catch air on almost the slightest of bumps. Potholes? FFFFFFFFFFFFF
My back is screaming just thinking about it lol
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:34 |
|
Yeah, it doesn’t. Mine’s also 2wd, which uses different front suspension. Completely different.
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:34 |

They look titties with body-color bits.
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:36 |

it has a head gasket on its way out.......

When I totaled my truck, a friend of mine agreed to haul it the full 9.5 hours back home. The trip home was fine, but the 9.5 hours with an empty trailer were a killer.
We also experienced this with a partially loaded U-Haul van. We asked for a small one and they gave us the biggest one on the lot. Even with my car on a trailer on the back, the turnpike nearly beat us to death.

Lurve that refresh look
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:42 |
|
Das good shit. Obviously it’s a Cadillac, but I’m still curious, how comfy is it? Are the seats good and squishy?
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:42 |
|
Start a pool then ;)
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:43 |
|
Yeah I bought it knowing full well the problems that have been encountered
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:44 |
|
To be honest, the driver butt could use a reconditioning. I’ll get my wife on that when we get back home. But it is like driving a couch in nearly every aspect

I would still buy a seville, even with the Northstar problems. Its still a great vehicle around the engine, you’ll have fun
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:50 |
|
oh, i figure it will start its own “pool” soon enough. in the cylinders, under the overflow catch, under the exhaust pipe........ its a northstar, its just a short matter of time. sorry about your luck........
that is to say though, while they ARE running correctly before they give you problems, they are in fact wonderful cars..........

Back around 2000 I worked as an errand boy at a garage with a gas station (member those?). We had 4 pumps, 2 of which were full service and one of my tasks was pumping gas for the full service customers. There was a guy with a red ETC that came in like clockwork at 6 PM every Friday for a fill up and hung his cigar out the window while I pumped his gas. He always tipped me $2 then tore out of there, front wheels chirping. He was the only person I’ve ever met with one of these, so I’ve assumed smoking was a requirement for ownership.

Put a date on it!
Not trying to be contrarian. I couldn’t care less if it blew chunks everywhere. I just wanna know how long you think it’ll last
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:53 |
|
If it was cigar or pipe smoke I could deal. Cigarettes are rancid.
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:54 |

Those are neat cars! If you want the factory info I can look that up for you. Just need a vin and an email
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:56 |

How does this not drive you crazy? Just noticing it makes me feel like I’m going to have an anxiety attack.
![]() 07/26/2017 at 14:59 |
|
Oh those will be gone soon. TBH I didn’t even see it till I got it home last night
![]() 07/26/2017 at 15:01 |
|
and i didnt mean to sound like a jerk either. those are very nice, comfortable to drive cars........
before i put a number on it, ballpark how many miles a day you drive, and ballpark of how much time you spend idle in traffic(rough ballpark number is fine) and what part of the world you are in(its hard to make out the plates in the background).
![]() 07/26/2017 at 15:02 |
|
As it should be.
![]() 07/26/2017 at 15:04 |

I expect to put probably 8-10k per year. Mostly highway though still stop and go through the city. I live in Denver right now but will be moving to Seattle in the spring

Headgaskets?
![]() 07/26/2017 at 15:09 |

In good order. It does burn a bit of oil, so I’m going to perform the GM-recommended ring recondition

i live here in south texas, where it has been 104(in the shade). those northstars run NORMALLY at 300 degrees. here in my part of the world they gave it up fairly quick due to the harsh requirements of stop and go traffic and the heat....... and the northstars had a fair number of issues with its steel bolts into an aluminum block( the aluminum gives it up) where you are at, it might not be so harsh on the engine, with temperatures and all........
i give it right at 6 months continuous use (old as it is already).......
![]() 07/26/2017 at 15:32 |
|
6 months it is ;)
In my short time with it, highest coolant temp I’ve seen was 224.
![]() 07/26/2017 at 15:47 |
|
thats great, means you might actually(and i hope you do) get a nice long life out of it after all....... that puts me in at JAN 26? right?
![]() 07/26/2017 at 15:50 |
|
lol duuuuuuuuuuude!
![]() 07/26/2017 at 15:54 |

On my road trip, I saw an Eldorado convertible moving along on I70. It’s been a while since I’ve seen one of those on the road.
![]() 07/26/2017 at 15:59 |
|
Yup, got you marked down for Jan 26.
I hope it lasts me long enough. Knowing my Car ADD, I’ll sink a few grand into making it just right then I’ll get bored of it and sell/trade. Here’s to it lasting till then
![]() 07/26/2017 at 16:00 |
|
Well keep your eyes peeled and give me a friendly Oppo wave if you spot me :)
![]() 07/26/2017 at 16:10 |

to the lasting........

Sweet! One question, do you have documented proof of any headwork done?? If not for the love of god check your coolant and oil often!
Follow up, which suspention does it have?
![]() 07/26/2017 at 16:25 |
|
No documented anything lol. I will def be keeping close eyes on all fluids, temps and whatnot.
As for suspension it has or had RSS. I have a warning on the console and the pump actuates but possibly just rear. I have to inspect that.
![]() 07/26/2017 at 16:33 |
|
Yeah monitor those fluids. If vollant goes missing, check the oil. If that happens have atleast 2k to fix tge issue on hand. First gen northstars can be scary. And god damn i hope the cvrss was swapped and some one forgot to short the sensors. If not, just get a passive replacement kit. Cvrss replacement parts are staggeringly expensive. When my 98 needed them its was 800 a corner in parts alone! While its amazing when it works, its not worth the headache. There are some nice passive kits put there. If you only have the air system on the rear thats an easy fix.
God speed and may god have mercy on your wallet.

Sent you what info I had. Being ‘94 most information was never added to the system or has been purged

Thanks! You did prove it is actually an ETC and that’s something :)
![]() 07/26/2017 at 17:58 |

ETC?
![]() 07/26/2017 at 19:06 |

Eldorado ETC, or Eldorado Eldorado Touring Coupe

Ah ok

I’d be scared to death of that car. If it had RWD, I’d be more likely to take the plunge because RWD/drift, but I’d wanna be pals with a mechanic. Baseless fear? Perhaps...
